FUEL SCARCITY CAUSED BY SABOTAGE– ITA ENANG By Ofonime Honesty

Ita Enang

The current scarcity of petroleum products in Nigeria has been attributed to alleged sabotage by people who had the intention of fleecing the federal government and citizens of funds.
The disclosure was made by the Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, while featuring on a special interview session hosted by Ubong Ukutt on Atlantic FM, Uyo.
The presidential aide said the federal government has waded in to rectify the abnormality.
“We (Federal Government) had to fight and ensure that the price of fuel does not increase, that supply was available. You can see that there is enough fuel in the country now. No extra petrol has been brought into the country, fuel was hoarded.
“The fuel scarcity was a kind of a pre-emptive measure by marketers and some other political speculators who thought that they could use that opportunity to coerce the federal government to increase fuel price so that they can make more money”, he alleged.
Enang said several states are collaborating with the federal government to rectify the situation, and decried an alleged politicization of the scarcity by the Akwa Ibom State Government.
“Governments of different states did set up taskforces to make sure that petroleum products are not hoarded. Those who hoarded were forced to open; it did not happen in Akwa Ibom State. I pray the Akwa Ibom State Government to be very active in collaborating with the Federal Government when there is any issue that affects the people of Akwa Ibom State.
“It is not fair that every matter that concerns fuel or federal responsibility, some states would want the situation to get to hazardous stage for the citizens…The Akwa Ibom State government should intervene just like other states are doing. In matters like this, sometimes they lay back just to ensure that it is said ‘it is APC Federal Government.’ Suffering and fuel scarcity knows no political party”, he observed.
He made a case for the patronage of modular refineries by government. “The processes of modular refineries should be fast-tracked. That’s why I am still on the plan which I started when I was in the House of Representatives and Senate. We should not always go to the creeks and destroy the modular refineries –those ones they prefer to call ‘Illegal Refineries’. The federal government should officially and formally give fuel to these refineries let them produce…We should start helping the locally assembled refineries to start producing”, Ita Enang concluded.
