NANS Pledge To Defend Nigeria's Unity

The National Asso­ciation of Nigerian Students (NANS) says there is no going back in Nigeria’s existence as one united country and has urged the Federal Government to come up with solutions on how to resolve the various agita­tion’s threatening the uni­ty of the country.

The leadership of the students’ body led by its President, Comrade Aru­na Kadiri, stated this in Enugu when members of the association gathered to declare its stand on the state of the nation.

According to Kadiri, students are the majority stakeholders in the Nige­rian project, hence, NANS cannot folds its hands and watch the country disin­tegrate, adding that the association would brain­storm on solutions that will guarantee equity, fair play and justice for all ethnic nationalities in the country.

“Recall that as part of the first challenge that confronted Nigerian state on security issues was in 1962 Nigerian-Anglo De­fence pact that only the Nigerian students had the courage to reject and con­sequently shut down. To­day, we have resolved ve­hemently and consciously to address the nation and traditionally give them di­rection,” he said.

The NANS president stated that the reason the association decided to converge in Enugu was to fraternize with the Igbo people in their pains and agonies, which have meta­morphosed to the agita­tion for self-determination by groups like IPOB and MASSOB.

“The choice of Enugu is very significant and we consider the occasion ep­ochal. Among the issues threatening to tear the country apart is the agi­tation by the Indigenous People of Biafra, a group of some Igbo people. So, in coming to Enugu, it is to identify with the people of Igbo land and share in their concerns. But while doing that we must re­main united,” he added.
