Members of the Press,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is Barrack Obama that said “In every Generation the must be a defining moment”, it was with great joy and privilege for me to stand before you today not because I am better than any of you here, but it is God who makes everything beautiful in his own likeness and time that is why his Grace found me just as I am, for this reason may his name alone be highly exalted, Amen.

I return all thanks and praise to God Almighty for making today a reality – for granting me this rare privilege of serving Nigerian students in this capacity as the NANS JCC Chairman Akwa Ibom State. I thank the School Management for supporting us and seeing to it that we had a smooth transition. I will not fail to express my sincere gratitude to my predecessor and mentor – Comrade Akwaowo Clifford aka Mr. Capacity – for ensuring a peaceful and successful ratification process. He is one person who has changed the face of unionism in Akwa Ibom State and has grown and nurtured true democracy in the State’s NANS structure. I pray that God will give him the grace to maintain the tempo and even take it to a higher level.

A new day has come in the life of National Association of Nigerian Students - Joint Campus Committee (NANS JCC) Akwa Ibom State. As Zayn Malik puts it “there comes a day when you realize turning the page is the best feeling in the world. Because you realize there is so much more to the book than the page you were stuck on.” That day, for us, is today; it’s time for us to take our destiny into our hands. It’s time for us to make giant strides that will speak in our favour to generations of students after us.

My mission and driving force is to restructure NANS JCC Akwa Ibom State and reposition the body to function as it should towards the collective growth of every Nigerian student. I have a burning desire to rescue NANS from the claws of scoundrels and chameleons – wolves in sheep’s clothing – who would rather gratify themselves than work for the growth of the student community.

Let me state unequivocally that NANS is not an appendage of any political party, neither is it a support group for any politician’s aspiration, and any move to politicize NANS will be vehemently resisted. Rather, this is a pressure group to fend for and protect the interest of the Nigerian student. The welfare of the students is of utmost priority in our administration; hence, we plan to have a scheme known as Students Welfare Scheme (SWS) where students will be offered quality services across campuses at affordable prices.

I want to urge all Nigerian students to partake in the ongoing INEC voters’ registration, and obtain their PVCs as the 2019 general elections is approaching. This will be a golden opportunity to vote out all wicked leaders in the polity and ensure that those who get elected are those who will be accountable to those they represent.

- We recognize that security is not a one man business; hence, we will collaborate, negotiate and dialogue with the management of schools, security agencies and communities with the sole aim of bringing about lasting solutions to security challenges in and around our campuses. NANS JCC, under my watch, shall eradicate cultism and illicit drugs from our campuses. In like manner, certain persons parading themselves around as student leaders and NANS officials ought to know that their time is up as we will do everything within our capability to fish them out and expose them.
- Through advocacy we will demand for our libraries to be stocked with relevant books and our science laboratories to be well equipped.
- We will negotiate with the school managements for entrepreneurial skill training across campuses for students to prepare them for self-reliance after school.
- We will negotiate with the school managements towards organizing monthly prayers for students every first day of the month in all the campuses.

Let me assure that the labours of our heroes past – great NANS leaders like Christy Edward, Nicholas Udonkan of blessed memory, Onofiok Luke, Ini Ememobong, Ubon Marcus etc. – shall not be in vain, as we will continue to keep the flag flying in the struggle to
ensure an effective representation for the Nigerian students.

Finally, let me once again, thank our dynamic NANS ZONE B Deputy Coordinator, Comr. Akwaowo Clifford, and assure him that we will consolidate on his efforts. To the Students' Union Government Presidents and other Union stakeholders here present and in proxy, I say thank you for the confidence reposed on me as the #1 student in Akwa Ibom State. Let me end my speech by asserting that “we should think of what to offer the state and not what the state can offer us”. Our state Governor, Deacon Udom Emmanuel has done excellently well in our academic sector, we have witness continuous infrastructural and internal road construction in our campuses. We are all grateful. I promise to run an all-inclusive government and I urge all Nigerian students to support us to succeed.

Long Live Joint Campus Committee,
Long Live NANS,
Long Live Akwa Ibom State,
Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria,
Aluta Continua! Victoria Ascerta!

Signed

Comr. Ekanem Utibe
Chairman, Joint Campus Committee NANS, Akwa Ibom State
